Albanian fuel costs ALL 200-210/liter (~€1.80). The Albanian lek (ALL) is the currency, but euros are widely accepted at informal exchange rates. ATMs are common in towns. There are no motorway tolls. Rental cars are typically manual transmission. Mobile phone coverage is good on main routes but can drop in mountain areas. The best driving season is May-October. Traffic note: Tirana traffic is anarchic by European standards. Traffic lights are advisory for many drivers, lane discipline is nonexistent, and pedestrians, cars, and the occasional donkey share the roads. Mercedes-Benz vehicles dominate (Albania has the world's highest per-capita Mercedes ownership). The new A3 motorway to Elbasan has improved connections south. Road quality outside Tirana varies dramatically — main highways are acceptable but rural roads can deteriorate suddenly. Despite the chaos, Albanian drivers are generally skilled at avoiding collisions in impossible-seeming situations.
