West of Cologne, the Eifel is a volcanic highland with crater lakes, dense forests, and a wild beauty that surprises visitors expecting flat northern Germany. Key destinations:

Maastricht (Netherlands) is just 120 km west — famous for its underground cave systems, gourmet restaurants, and Europe's most atmospheric Christmas market. Liège (Belgium) is 110 km with its iconic stairway and waffle culture. Brussels is 220 km. Luxembourg City is 200 km. No border controls, no vignettes needed for Belgium or the Netherlands.

Speed limits on unrestricted Autobahn sections around Cologne are rare — most sections are limited to 100-130 km/h due to traffic volume. Cycling is popular and growing. The Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) runs an extensive tram and bus network. During Carnival (February), large parts of the city center close to traffic.
