Budapest is an outstanding starting point for exploring Central Europe by car. The Hungarian capital sits at the crossroads of major routes leading to Vienna, Bratislava, Zagreb, and the Hungarian countryside. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is located 16 km southeast of the city centre. The car rental centre is in the multi-story car park directly opposite Terminal 2, connected by a covered walkway. All major international and several local companies operate here.

All Hungarian motorways require an e-matrica (electronic vignette). This is not a physical sticker but is linked to your licence plate. Key details:
April-May and September-October are ideal. Spring brings wildflowers and pleasant temperatures. Autumn is harvest season in the wine regions, with festivals throughout the country. Summer (June-August) is hot, often exceeding 35°C, and Lake Balaton is packed with domestic tourists. Winter is cold but offers thermal bath tourism and Budapest's famous Christmas markets.
Hungarian roads vary widely in quality. Motorways are modern and well-maintained, but secondary roads can be rough and narrow, especially in rural areas. Speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h outside towns, and 50 km/h within towns. Hungary has a zero-tolerance policy for drink-driving — the blood alcohol limit is 0.00%.
Fuel costs around HUF 600-650 per litre (~€1.55-€1.65). MOL is the dominant Hungarian fuel chain with well-maintained stations. Motorway rest stops have adequate facilities but are spaced further apart than in Western Europe.
Budapest's location makes cross-border trips tempting. Always inform your rental company if you plan to cross into another country. Many companies charge a cross-border fee (€15-€50) and some restrict travel to certain countries. Trips to Austria, Slovakia, and Slovenia are generally permitted. Travel to Romania, Serbia, or Ukraine may require special permission or be prohibited entirely. Each country requires its own motorway vignette or toll system.
Parking in central Budapest is zoned and time-limited during business hours but free in the evenings and on Sundays. Use the Parkl or ParkMaster app to pay for on-street parking. Underground garages are reasonably priced by European standards. Most hotels in the inner city do not have their own parking, so factor in garage costs when choosing accommodation.

Traffic note: Budapest traffic is heavy, especially on the bridges connecting Buda and Pest during rush hours (7:00-9:30, 16:00-18:30). The city has an environmental zone (green zone) covering the area within the Hungária körút ring road, though enforcement is limited. Hungarian drivers can be aggressive, especially on multi-lane roads. Trams have absolute priority and run on tracks embedded in the road surface. Be extremely careful not to block tram lines. Speed cameras are common on main roads and fines are issued on the spot by police. A motorway vignette (e-matrica) is required for all Hungarian motorways, purchasable online or at petrol stations.
