Geneva sits at the crossroads of Switzerland, France, and the Alps, making it an exceptional base for one of Europe's most scenic road trips. Autumn brings spectacular colours to the Lavaux vineyards and comfortable temperatures. Summer (July-August) is warm and the highest Alpine passes are all open, but popular destinations are crowded. Winter is ski season — mountain roads require winter tyres (mandatory in Switzerland from October to April in practice) and chains for passes.
Swiss roads are immaculate. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h outside towns, and 50 km/h in towns, with extremely strict enforcement. Exceeding the speed limit by 25+ km/h in a built-up area can result in criminal prosecution and vehicle confiscation. Swiss police do not tolerate any margin of error.
Crossing into France, road quality remains good but the driving culture is more relaxed. French Alpine roads are dramatic, with hairpin bends, tunnels, and steep gradients. The Mont Blanc Tunnel (Geneva to Italy via Chamonix) charges approximately €50 one way for a car.
Fuel in Switzerland costs approximately CHF 1.85-2.00 per litre (~€1.90-2.05). In neighbouring France, it is slightly cheaper. Fill up in France if your route allows.

Geneva parking is expensive. The best strategy is to use a P+R (Park and Ride) facility, which includes a free TPG transport pass for the Geneva public transit system. The P+R at Bernex and Sous-Moulin are excellent value at CHF 3-5 per day. If you must park centrally, the Parking du Mont-Blanc is most convenient for the lakefront. For day trips, parking is generally free at Alpine trailheads in France and at most smaller Swiss towns.

The city straddles the French border, and many visitors staying in nearby French towns (Annemasse, Ferney-Voltaire) drive in daily, creating heavy cross-border traffic. Rush hours (7:30-9:00, 17:00-19:00) see severe congestion at border crossings and on the autoroute. A Swiss motorway vignette (CHF 40/year) is required for Swiss motorways. If only driving in Geneva city, you may not need one. GPS navigation is essential in the one-way system around the lake.
