Milan is not a typical tourist city — it runs on business, fashion, and design. This means hotel prices spike dramatically during trade fairs and Fashion Weeks (February, April, June, September), sometimes tripling overnight. Time your visit around these events unless you specifically want to attend them.
April's Design Week (Salone del Mobile) is the exception — it's worth the premium. The entire city becomes a stage for installations, pop-up exhibitions, and parties in the Brera and Tortona districts. Even if you're not a design professional, the energy is infectious and most events are free.
The Po Valley climate means Milan gets genuinely cold in winter (fog and frost from November to February) and uncomfortably humid in summer. The ideal windows are late May to mid-June and mid-September to mid-October, when temperatures are pleasant and the city is lively without being sweltering. August is best avoided unless you want a cheap but eerily quiet Milan — the Ferragosto holiday empties the city and many restaurants close for two to four weeks.
Four times a year: Women's collections in February and September, Men's in January and June. Hotel prices spike 50-200% during these weeks — book three months ahead or stay in Bergamo/Como and train in.
Only if you want cheap hotels and don't mind limited restaurants. Many shops and restaurants close for 2-4 weeks around Ferragosto (Aug 15). The Duomo, museums, and The Last Supper stay open.
May and October, both averaging 95-100mm. Milan gets more rain than London overall, but it falls in shorter, heavier bursts rather than all-day drizzle. Thunderstorms are common in late spring and early autumn.
Excellent — trains from Milano Centrale reach Varenna in one hour and Como town in 40 minutes. The lakes are best from April to October, with June-September being prime swimming and boat season.
