Lithuania is the largest of the Baltic states and arguably the most rewarding for budget travellers. Vilnius has the largest baroque Old Town in Central and Eastern Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage site that you can explore for days without paying an entry fee. The city's creative energy is palpable, from the self-declared Republic of Užupis (an artists' quarter with its own constitution) to a restaurant scene that punches far above its price point. Lithuanian food is hearty and satisfying: cepelinai (giant potato dumplings stuffed with meat), šaltibarščiai (vivid pink cold beet soup) and kibinai (Karaite pastries from Trakai) are all dirt cheap and genuinely delicious.
Beyond Vilnius, Lithuania's landscape unfolds into rolling hills, dense forests and a coastline dominated by the extraordinary Curonian Spit — a 98km sand dune peninsula shared with Russia's Kaliningrad. Driving the Spit from Klaipėda south to Nida, with its Thomas Mann house and massive dunes, is one of the Baltic's great road trips. The interior road from Vilnius through Kaunas (Lithuania's second city, with striking interwar modernist architecture) to the coast passes through the Žemaitija highlands and Aukštaitija National Park. Car rental is affordable, roads are in decent condition, and distances are manageable — Vilnius to the coast is about four hours. Fuel is cheaper than in Western Europe, and rural guesthouses offer warm hospitality at €20-35 a night.
Lithuania is the Baltic bargain that most budget travellers walk past on their way to Estonia or Latvia — which makes it even better value. Vilnius, with its Baroque old town, thriving street food scene, and genuine local culture, regularly comes in under €40 per day for a frugal traveller. Away from the capital, the Curonian Spit, Hill of Crosses, and Trakai Island Castle draw big crowds but almost no budget infrastructure pressure. The currency is the euro (€), which removes any exchange-rate complications.
Halės Market (Halės Turgus) in central Vilnius is the best cheap food stop in the city. Smoked meats, local cheese, fresh rye bread, pickled vegetables, and hot dishes like cepelinai (potato dumplings stuffed with meat, €2.50–3.50) are all available. The covered section has cheap hot food stalls serving Lithuanian staples for €3–5 a plate. Open Tuesday to Sunday.
Gedimino Prospektas and the Užupis neighbourhood have cheap kebab shops and bakeries — a freshly baked šakotis (tree cake) slice goes for €1.50 at most bakeries. Look for Ponpon and Duona ir Ko bakeries for cheap bread and pastries.
Maxima is Lithuania's dominant supermarket chain (XXX format for larger stores). A full day of self-catering from Maxima — bread, cold cuts, dairy, fruit, drinks — runs €6–9. Lidl has expanded significantly and is often the cheapest option. Iki and Rimi are mid-range chains with good ready-meal sections. Most supermarkets have hot food counters with roast chicken, baked goods, and soups at excellent prices.
Look for "valgykla" (canteen-style) eateries throughout Vilnius. These serve Lithuanian home cooking — cold beetroot soup (šaltibarščiai), fried bread with garlic (kepta duona), potato pancakes (bulviniai blynai) — for €4–7 for a full meal. Boulangerie Malūnas near the university and Etno Dvaras (the cheaper lunch version) are good starting points.
Vilnius city buses and trolleybuses: single trip €1 (purchased via the m.Ticket app, which is cheaper than the driver). A 24-hour unlimited pass costs €5. Monthly cards are sold at Vilniaus Viešasis Transportas service points — not useful for tourists but worth knowing for longer stays.
Intercity buses are the cheapest way to travel between Lithuanian cities. Kautra and Toks operate the main routes. Vilnius to Kaunas: €5–7, about 1.5 hours. Vilnius to Klaipėda (for the Curonian Spit): €12–16, about 3.5 hours. Book at Vilnius Bus Station (Autobusų Stotis) or via bus tickets.lt.
LTG Link trains cover Vilnius–Kaunas in 1.5 hours for €4–6. The Vilnius–Klaipėda route takes 4 hours and costs €10–16. Trains are slightly slower than buses but more comfortable.
For the Curonian Spit, take a bus to Klaipėda then a ferry to Smiltynė (€1.80 passenger fare). Cycling the spit is the budget-optimal way to explore — bike rentals in Nida cost €10–12/day.
Vilnius has a solid hostel scene concentrated in the Old Town. Jimmy Jumps House and Hostel 2200 regularly price dorm beds at €10–14. For private rooms, guesthouses just outside the Old Town (Šnipiškės or Naujamiestis neighbourhoods) offer doubles for €30–45.
Camping is excellent and cheap along the Curonian Spit and near Trakai. The Spit has several official campgrounds charging €5–8 per person. The Curonian Spit National Park entry fee (€3 for cyclists, €5 for cars) covers the national park levy. Wild camping is technically restricted in the national park but tolerated in the forests at least 500 metres from roads.
Best value: Kaunas is Lithuania's underrated second city with lower prices than Vilnius across the board. The art deco architecture, Žalgiris Arena neighbourhood, and Kaunas Castle are explored for free. Meals cost €1–2 less per dish than equivalent places in Vilnius. Šiauliai is a functional city worth a half-day for the Hill of Crosses — stay in Kaunas or Panevėžys instead.
Higher cost: Nida on the Curonian Spit is Lithuania's most expensive resort destination in summer, with restaurant prices approaching Western European levels and accommodation 50–80% more than Vilnius. The shoulder season (May–June, September) brings prices back to affordable levels and the spit is arguably more beautiful with fewer crowds.
Lithuania's tourist season runs June–August. In May and September, hotel prices in Vilnius drop 25–35% and the city is noticeably less crowded. The weather in September is often better than August (less rain, temperatures 16–22°C). October brings autumn colour to the forests near Trakai and Aukštaitija National Park but hotel prices fall a further 15–20%.
Winter (November–March) is the cheapest period — hostel dorms fall to €8–11, hotels to €30–50 for doubles in Vilnius. Vilnius' Christmas market (late November–January 5) is one of the best in the Baltics and largely free to enjoy.
Lithuania participates fully in the European Student Card (ESC) and ISIC scheme. Most national museums offer 50% reduction with a valid ISIC card — the National Museum of Lithuania charges €5 normally, €2.50 with ISIC. Trakai Island Castle: €10 normal, €5 with student ID.
